Healing with UV Light

How does phototherapy work?

  • It is anti-inflammatory on the skin and internally. UV light decreases overactive immune cells and increases the cells that turn off inflammatory reactions, called regulatory T and B cells.
  • It strengthens the immune system, in particular, the innate immune system, which is responsible for defense against infections.
  • It supports the microbiome by reducing pathogenic bacteria on the skin like staph aureus and increasing beneficial bacteria like staph. epidermidis. It improves the quality of the gut microbiome by increasing the diversity.
  • It improves mood, in part by releasing endorphins.
